Sometime after 1994 a gormless footballer called Mickey Mellon played for Blackpool. I was young, on scout camp and one lad called Neil who was the leader of the pack so to speak decided to call me Mickey Mellon. I have now built up some kind of resistance to personalities like this, probably due to this one special Neil who had powers of convincing beyond most people's wildest imaginations. Neil decides that since i'm called michael and this "random" Mickey Mellon plays for blackpool, i should then be called Mickey Mellon. Logical enough. Better not to question the logic of this pop swigging charmer when he's bigger than you. Lazy kids playing football and imagining they are footballers from 2nd division teams get fired up and in the game of life Mickey Mellon gets shortened to Melon and sticks long enough to get me to college where it becomes a strange nickname that everyone seems to latch on to. NO. Its got absolutely nothing to do with me having a melon head.

Along comes college and all that stuff and my friend Tom "Haggis" decides i look strangely like the kid in the film "Kes". He's not wrong and my childhood experiences in the showers at secondary school being a bit crap at football and not completely fitting in to the general way things go. I dont Disagree with Tom as i actually quite like that guy and he's honest and he's giving me a nickname from a film that i actually totally love. Beautiful film about a working class lad growing up and befriending a wild Kestrel. Billy Casper has a coat like mine but is actually from Yorkshire not Lancashire. Still Kes sticks and other local kids call me Kes and even some parents think that this is still my real name it gets used so much. I'm quite happy to be associated to this bird loving kid who really does look a lot like me. i'll let you be the judge.

i struggle one day to find an email address that isn't already used ... i'm not really the kind of person to have melon1982 or something gay like that so i opt out of the english language and create a new word. My mate Christy thinks that my actual name is Kes and he assumes that my last name must be Keswick or something like that. Its not, but again i'm happy with the association and Keswick becomes the starting point of my search for unabused email addresses. Keswickmelon is a bit too obvious and i have a bit of a passion for lemons. Lemon being an anagram of melon it makes sense to me at the time and i arrive at Keswicklemon in a focused but round about way. Not likely that anyone will try to steal it from me as its so so abstract and with that history you can't really argue with its origin as a name. Not hoping for a dictionary add or anything and pl

I came to this zine wanting it to be inspirational, something about clearing out the cobwebs cutting up the old paper and making something new. Hopeful that it would be ghetto from the cover inwards but instead i was greeted with a soft computer typed zine about love and loneliness. Subjects that i don't really want to deal with right now, so i will let you have the blog address and leave it at that i think it says it all.

Loving the recycled book cover but i really feel the need to re recycle it into art; maybe later once i have fully digested the information inside. Can fully understand where this one is coming from as i am writing this review while sat in a house being a housewife in the suburbs far enough from the city that i feel totally isolated. Like i said i really know where this one is coming from but all the swearing actually written down is pretty harsh. What strikes me about this writer is that she really really has plenty to say and its straight up to the point personal hard hitting honesty. She really wants to share her motherly wisdom to help the rest of us feel better about things. Certainly not sitting on the fence this hot rod librarian has got some things to say about bringing up children properly. I must say i agree with pretty much everything in the zine and anything that makes me laugh out loud is good news living out here in the suburbs. I'll definitely not cut up the cover to make more art works but i might follow the directions on how to make my own play dough!

To say that i'm a fan of the cut and paste aesthetic is a little bit of an understatement. So this cut and pasted, photocopier as an instrument zine is right up my street. I'm not sucking up but the writitng in this zine is way more insightful than the usual i hate this i hate that i'm cool your not; kind of zine writing i usually read. As i'm writing this i'm literally getting seriously distracted reading the miniature hand written writing on every page of this simply beautiful little thing that is just reality distilled into paper. A real person writing down her woes, her ideas her hopes and dreams. if only the manager of Fuji Xerox could read this. He would understand, he would understand everything.

The thing about paper is: if someone really reads your stuff, or if you make music... if someone really really listens to your music. they read your words then they talk to you about it from the heart. that is why you write, just for that one person... that one person every now and then who really understands. they read it and they say yes i got it . Zines are about conversations they are about working together to create something that can be shared. Something thats actually worth sharing. The more i read of this zine the more i realize that its much deeper than just paper. its history , dreams , hopes , success stories and struggles all beautifully written and laid out. you just have to read it and you will understand. i was thinking 300 copies ? whoa thats a bit wild . . . now i understand . i'm just hoping that the people who get hold of one of these do actually read it all the way to the back. So by the time you get to the disclaimer you pretty much know everything all the heart felt words have been spilt beautifully all over the page. Success Stories is the kind of zine that needs a soundtrack with music, interspersed with silence and space, Much like our lives .

Watch the flow unfold as you flip, find the hidden extras and enjoy the detail and effort that went into producing this simple but intricate work. Laser Stan is a storybook its detail and impact is memorable as the work of David Shrigley Andy Riley or even George Lucas. I'm not sure if every copy comes with a poster but mine is going on the fridge. Explosive full colour cartoon gem, i'm looking forward to the next character Cameron Baker creates.

I cant help noticing when i open up a zine that its upside down. You know when your sat on a train people look at you funny they think why the hell is that guy reading that magazine upside down, (is he crazy?) can he read upside down? well the answer is yes i can read upside down and actually its quite fun drawing and writing upside down as you get more into the shapes of the words and the shape of the subject rather than getting caught up in thinking about how your mind usually processes information. On first impressions this zine looks like its going to be really exciting after i have taken the staples out got a bit of pain trying to put the staples back in with the cover turned the right way now... so i don't draw attention to myself too much on the train i now start to read the zine and it has way too many words. which is making me think maybe this review should have been short and sweet rather than long and painful. in the past i have written some reviews of techno records for Boomkat and some of those reviews were very uncomfortable due to the indifference to the music involved this is not going to be painful. Page 3 usually has a naked girl on it but instead i'm greeted with Captain Beefheart which is much more pleasant than what i could have been delt. Other subjects include The Cuban Boys (not really a fan) What i'm reading which sort of reviews books by Kurt Vonnegut, Charles Saatchi and Maude Farrugla. So if you can get into the simple 1 bit images there are actually lots of interesting nuggets of information captured by this zinester and if you have the time to read his blog you might find out a whole world of information written by an interesting and well informed blogger. his review of the stolen sharpie revolution 2 book is almost as interesting a read as the book itself.

I have been thinking words... overrated, lots of words... even more so. Teef, is the way you say teeth while you are actually brushing your teeth, its a voyeurs visual guide to a few special moments shared probably just before bedtime with some close friends. Joe's friend Bruce has a cool looking jumper on on the front cover doing his teeth brushing pose. i'm glad he didnt over intellectualize this study into peoples late night teeth rubbing habits with meaningful words. Teef zine is poetry with light and toothpaste.

beautiful well loved quirky but mechanically sound diesel toyota townace van with double bed drawers loads of storage space two front seats no back seats just bed. one wonderful little wooden and canvas stool. big milage but its a toyota and these things just seem to go and go ! i have got it through its wof each time 3 times i think now and usually it just needs a few little things like windscreen wipers replacing ... last wof it needed tyres... so i have two new tyres on the back and two good one (but not new) on the front . the spare is not really that great . its just ran out of its registration so that needs to be done . $417 for a year i think for this model. so the van comes with drawers, working stereo that takes tapes (with ipod input in the front too) loads of cool curtains with pockets and solar powered lights and hooks for dangling spoons. breathe.

will keep you dry and safe all over the north south wet dry cold new zealand country. as well as being warm and dry in the wet it also goes pretty fast comfortably cruises at 115++ if you want to push it happiest at around 90 tho goes well up gravel roads even steep ones thanks to the new rear tyres. although i must say it is definitely not 4WD so dont go crazy on the offroading and in the mud its a TOWNace not a MUDace. i will clean it up before i sell it so it will be all clean swept and ready to accept new goodies. there are some cool cool tapes in the collection too so i will include them if you want them , Severed Heads , The Cure , Ltj Bukem , Robert Johnson, Mooken - Mixtapes etc.... amazing stuff for driving around . the outside is grey. the last owner was a mechanic who restored classic cars ... so when i got it it had spare parts included : Spare Radiator , clutch , brake pads , oil filter, NZ lonely planet guide, herb books , wwoofing book, ice scraper and this van also comes with total freedom to go wherever you want to go and fill with whatever lovely stuff you want to fill with it . its a manual with a hand stiched gear knob cover if that doesn't seal the deal then i dont know what will . oh the van has also a built in fruitbowl in the front so you always have enough fruit close by. the van is a lady and she's called Urika Holland (UH2758)

I was thinking i'd have an exhibition but i moved out in the sticks and i am currently digging holes for roses and walking barefoot in the mud, who knows what i'll be doing tomorrow but i am thinking i might be digging out leaves from the drains and other such delights ( seriously that is NOT COMPLAINING !) i actually love the sense of accomplishment and my patch of land that i dug over today looks absolutely beautiful and much nicer than it looked this morning. i'm happy i like the smell of fresh eggs from the chickens in the morning and i like waking up knowing that i am not going to get paid! The wastebusters (recycling centre) is a bike ride away and my bike was returned to me thanks to the wonderful staff at Queenstown Police station. Thats the news, this is a post for my friends , you know who you are !

i have a new penpal and we started this exchange by chance, some things just feel right and this is one of those things that feels just right. these kind of conversations are impossible to plan as each turn of the corner you learn something new. i should really make her a cassette tape mixtape today but its really sunny again and i want to take advantage of it while its good weather so i'll just do a little typing then shoot off out again. so here we go. . .

1. Bicycles, Generally.... all kinds . ones with one wheel ones with two girls on bikes, couriers bikes, i like them all ! it is fitting that i have a portland bicycle photograph to illustrate number one !

2. Alela Diane (from portland i think? fantastic music) actually i'd like to extend this one too ALL GIRLS WHO LIVE IN PORTLAND although that is quite a lot of people if you look at portland as part of the world then its not very many people at all and there is something special about portland i cant quite put my finger on it right now but there is definitely something in the air in that town, something in the air that i really love!

As we go through life i find more and more that the things we love most are often things that you have thrust upon you by a friend. Without really knowing you find yourself opened up to all kinds of new kinds of music because of a list of recommendations given to you by someone you respect . Music , Books , Films the best way of coming across things often needs a personal touch. My next set of lists is a personal investigation into music that has been recommended to me by my best friends. Starting with a list from Danny Norbury... well its my list of Danny's best recommendations for me over a period of a few years danny has bought me a fair few records and burned me a right good bunch of CD's to check out. Before i go on i have to say that these kind of acts of thoughtful listening have shaped my record collection and sent me in directions that i would have never looked towards. invaluable is a good word to describe it.

so here are my favorite of Danny's recommendations to me over the last few years.

10 : Six Organs of Admittance : For Octavio Paz . Perfect gentle music for an afternoon alone. i would almost feel a little wrong sharing this kind of music with another person. It would have to be a special person if i was to sit down and listen to this with someone i suppose that says something about danny sharing his music . which i think he sometimes finds hard letting it into the world as it is very true, honest, personal music that he is sharing after all . sometimes i find myself being recommended records and i have so so many of my own that i want to listen to that i don't even get around to listening to CDr's that people burn for me. sometimes i dont even listen to a proper cd... for months after i have received it . it sometimes takes an event a quiet day alone or a empty afternoon to get down and actually spend some time taking it all in . The next "group of albums" i was given by danny was a different kind of story. They sounded too good to ignore so i went home and listened to them straight away and was blown away !

9. This one is for Ross and Jase... its totally essential listening; British, Futuristic, like steel and glass in a cold cold space i have since got the vinyl copies of this but originally danny burned me the whole box-set when it was re released a few years ago i had no idea what it was until i put on This Heat : This Heat . . . then Health and Efficiency, Stunning . Flying lizards and also the touch tape General Strike ... all this amazing british music was opened up to me through these 6 cds This Heat - Out Of Cold Storage box ! Mind loosening music !

8. Danny used this on his Mix cd that we did together both the movie and the soundtrack totally blow me away. The Gentle Friendliness of the film is awesome and silent at the same time. This film has become one of my all time favorite films and Wim Wenders best film by a mile in my opinion i still watch his new films but the overall quality of Wings Of Desire is just astounding. Angels in the Architecture : Penguin Cafe Orchestra : The sound of someone you love who's going away and it doesn't matter. Thats my response to that one.

7. A Cheap tip that is worth infinitely more than the pound (or less) that it will cost you to find this beautiful record. i think danny played me the Serenade To Music track first as we were doing a classical music Dj set together a few years ago at common... it didnt go down too well in a busy bar but this music is another personal quiet moment favorite of mine. The Lark Ascending is also a perfect piece of music that requires your attention. Thankyou again to danny for playing me these i cant help but buy up every nice copy i see now especially because it only costs me £1!

6. No idea how danny ended up with this CD but its beautiful and i hold this responsible for triggering this set of lists in the first place. i was listening to it while doing my grandparents decorating the other day and my grannie thinks that the musicians all sound as tho they are playing different songs. Its not as polished as some of the other items coming up on this list but its a great album all the same joy filled music that inspires the same kinds of feelings brought on by albums such as come on feel the illinois by Sufjan Stevens another of Danny's faves but slightly too obvious for this sort of investigation !

5. A solid number five something that i was aware of but a little bit bemused by this is probably some of John Cage's more Accessible music especially in comparison to the Winter Music Lp that i gave to danny. Twinkly and unpredictable prepared piano this is another world that danny opened up to me by lending me Silence, this record is the starting point for the heavy heavy hitters that are in the top five !

4. i'm not sure that i fully get Janáček but it definitely is something special. This is something that danny rates with the highest respect i still find it very difficult and often really quite scary in places. it has to go up high on the list because it really is deep dense music and listening back to it again i feel that i probably have not given this record enough of my time. i tried listening to the opera Z mrtvého domu which means 'From the House of the Dead'. Hard hard listening this kind of music is for people who want an undiluted look at fear . Scarier than most Horror soundtracks for me... possibly because i'm not fully getting it yet . time will tell with this one.

3. More fear here with some interpretations of Hiroshima this is also not music for the faint hearted my personal favorite is Alle Vittime Di Hiroshima. its not the sort of music i would recommend to anyone . At this moment i'm not sure i should be listening to it myself as its making me feel really tense.

2. Rothko Chapel by Morton Feldman ; Danny gave me this as i was getting better from quite a serious illness and the calming sounds on this record i definitely do get! in retrospect all these last 4 classical masterpieces in Danny's top ten are all very deep meaningful records that have a very delicate sound. This one is an album to aspire to an album of quiet space and soothing sounds to impress good colours onto your soul. This is not easy music to get into either and it is a little bit eerie . Another record i will keep forever . Timeless.

1. Christian Marclay : Record Player . WOW was my first reaction. this DVD is pure inspiration for me i am lucky enough to own a copy thanks to danny. Its a DVD that i always go back to to feel inspired again and again . i strongly recommend that you watch this DVD if you get the chance its incredible what Christian Marclay has done in his life . Some of the most groundbreaking and memorable artworks that i have ever seen just happen to be made by him this Youtube clip doesn't really work as well as the original version but its good all the same . I would really like to see this piece again ! thanks danny thats your top ten recommendations

So Spring is nearly here and i wanted to write another top ten list this one is about birds

10 Tips for people caring for little sweet spring birds. NAH! its not, that would be a stupid post them little birds take care of themselves just fine without our human input unless they hit a bus or something . Hear all, see all, say nowt, tak' all, keep all, gie nowt, and if tha ever does owt for nowt do it for thysen. Well that would be a bit sad if everyone did just that, so here is a list for an old friend who doesnt talk to me all that much anymore due to many things. 1 being he thinks ...no wait : Knows i'm a bellend. and 2, he lives on the other side of the world to me, plus i forgot his birthday as i do every year with everyone i know, unless they remind me or they are actually in my presence on the day itself. Life is strange and people drift . So this one is for you Luke for the good times we shared, and lost.

Here then are 10 simple do’s and don'ts to improve the taste of your spunk and make it taste better and sweeter:

1. dont do alcohol, caffeine, drugs and dirty fags they make you look like a bellend and they're all proper nasty !

2. Drink lots of lovely water 2 – 3 liters a day to flush out body toxins and its gods water. Birds need water too you know.

3. Fruit, get plenty each day and sweeten your sperm naturally
Pineapple, papaya cranberry, melons, mangos, apples grapes are all good choices. These fruits are high in natural sugars and offset the bitter taste of the white stuff.

4. Eat plenty of vegetables which are generally good for improving spunk taste.

5. While it is sometimes true vegetarians generally have better tasting spunk there are vegetables to avoid:

Keswicklemon Interviews : July 2005

In 2005 i did a series of interviews talking to people who know their stuff about rare records, mostly disco records and records to be played in a disco situation. In short i picked the brains of both Alex Bond from the
New Religion label and also Balearic Mike from Vinyl Exchange in Manchester.

Here is a short interview with Balearic Mike on the subject of Cosmic Disco : a lot has happened since i did this interview but i still think it has some interesting points and some tunes to track down. Mike was really one of the people who knew a lot about cosmic before it became 'the thing to say you play' ! Mikes mixes have always been original and often i'd cringe when he played certain cheesy records when he used to work at vinyl exchange. Looking back from where i am now i realize that even the rubbish records he liked were just records i didn't quite get at the time. Mike was buying records before i was even born and it really shows in his selections. try and track down some of his mixes online or buy his Originals CD if you can find a copy anywhere as it looks to be sold out everywhere it was available.

The interview with Alex Bond took place in Oklahoma Cafe around the same time as Mikes interview about a year after his compilation called "A Secret History came out, a compilation bringing together many absolutely classic records from the past that was a bit of an eye opener for me New Religion Presents A Secret History Discogs Page i also saw alex Dj a few times and his mixes on Ableton Live were really something special especially one night at Black Heart Disco (possibly the last one?) Alex seriously destroyed the dancefloor mixing Basic Channel records with disco and dropping just a few seconds of a really really fat beat into the mix. Like i said Alex knows his stuff and he is another serious serious record collector with some really special pieces. have a listen to his voice here talking on the subject of Techno Not Techno.

What ive been waiting to post for a while now and after last nights Move D dj set at Meandyou i think the set he played live at lick was way way better than that. Deep Deep sounds Get it here no tracklist or anything and this has never been available before i'd forgotten it even existed until a few weeks ago...

So Miles Dj'd and was brilliant i might even have a recording of that too will check and post it in the future. The night before Shlom from Boomkat was doing a night with Thaddi from CCO and Svarte Greiner (Type, Deaf Centre etc...) so we hooked up and saved money by printing all the flyers together. Super weekend and absolutely stunning music all round as you might expect from these solid characters.

Xela Again playing proper ace scary horror soundtracks. and this was proper good stuff no semi scary stuff really really good good stuff. wish i had a recording of it but i dont sadly, you had to be there. Sean playing stunning turkish records and mad mad records that you never heard of. Joseph bromley playing good drama jazz stuff but i think he was bit put off scratching by the shoddiness of that crappy mixer and turntables that have had a lot of hammering over the years in common it was good all the same.

Possible contender for the best Dj set EVER is the very well informed and meticulously planned west coast electro set 1983-1986 by Howie at baked goods ! Serious Sickness in common it sounded like something from the future had landed and i dont think i heard a beat dropped ! this night we also had a live violin solo set by Rob's cousin i think ?
Robin Pinning who put on people like Chez Damier and Greg Wilson at his shortlived Prescription night played a blinder too deep down detroit house and jazzy stuff .
i'll get him to upload a mix on here so that you can check his styles out.

Probably the best lick EVER first time we had Mr Goodiepal on he brought his mechanical bird and wowed a small but interested crowd so much that you could hear a pin drop in the bar. The performance was amazing so i dont really need to say anything else.

This is a mix for my friend ross who i used to live with he's supposed to be doing a mix himself that i'll post up here once its finished . he's a bit of a perfectionist Dj Bumamps is not so this one is a bit ropy not completely terrible tho i hope, at least the tunes are good int it. No one called helen died that i know of i'm sure that someone called helen is resting in peace somewhere but the image has no relation to the music or anything like that its just me messing about in my bedroom nothing fancy.
the picture is from Moog bar in nottingham and i made the word bumamps on the spinning letters out in the smoking area. i think i have a cold now from standing outside too much but thats the problem with smoking being banned in clubs. If the people you are with smoke you end up having to stand outside with all the other cool people getting ill cos its so bloody cold. its a total bummer if you are a non smoker and have lots of cool friends who dont seem to be affected by the freezing weather.

This is not actually an Ono release but it is photos of an Ono event so i wanted to upload some of Andrew John Holland's photos from the gig on sunday. Andrew has not yet tweaked them properly so they are not final versions but they do look nice. Here they are in chronological order sunset to total darkness. Sadly the recording device used for recording the event didnt record the music so all we have is images of the night.

Black Heart Disco

Now legendary Manchester club night that i really really wish had carried on. Good things have to come to an end sometimes. i wanted to upload the flyers for the night as a collection that i kept at the time. The flyers are in chronological order from the very first one to the last... i think i might be missing one or two but not too many. i also have a mix cd by alex bond to promote the night. Although not much info exists on this event and i cant remember exactly what was played on the nights as i was usually a little tipsy, i'm sure Andy-O will remember much more about it and if he reads this i'd like him to comment or maybe add a bit of his take on the events.

22 Ono Sore Nipples

This release started out as a concept album about breastfeeding and i just wanted to promote the practice of breastfeeding amongst mothers, personally i'd definitely breast feed if i was a woman even tho it does cause sore nipples. i was breastfed and i was a happy baby for quite a while as i breastfed my mum tells me that i gained weight steadily and i latched on comfortably.

so the Black Toothed Grin tracknames are all breastfeeding related sort of... and on this release jan makes his solo debut on track one and there are some keswicklemon tracks at the end. This cd is intended to make people laugh so please do. The music is intentionally Lo Fi and there is a bit of sampling going on from records mostly. things like Prophylactic childbirth preparation and other such childbirth and child related recordings. Jan Czugalinski has listened to this release and now wants nothing more to do with this project. Jan said that just because he was there when we recorded the music doesn't mean that he agrees with the release. He found it difficult listening to say the least. Black Toothed Grin is definitely not anything like Bob Marley, it is not advised to smoke and listen to this cd.

List : Ono Meanings

I was told by a friend that ono means small field in Japanese. after a bit of gentle investigating i found lots and lots of interesting meanings for the word ono and also some people and places named ono. its raining outside so i feel its time well spent compiling this new list if only for my own amusement. its not a top ten or anything just some interesting facts

Ono means 'delicious''scrumptious' or even 'Sweet' in Hawaiian. In Hawaii it refers to a fish which is a delicacy in those parts that is also called a Wahoo. It is very similar to a snapper but is much dryer and firmer.

Ono also means "Or Nearest Offer" (see the post about the Rossendale hospice shop!)

Ono is also a Spanish cable company

The Japanese meaning for Ono is an axe. My friend Danny also told me that in Japan Ono also means 'Small Field' i just discovered that this is indeed true. In Japan Ono (小野) also means 'Small Field' or Ōno (大野) means 'Large Field'.

Ono is also the surname of Yoko Ono a Japanese lady who married the Beatle John Lennon, Yoko was also a member of the Fluxus art movement.

Ono-i-Lau is a volcanic and coral island island Fiji's Lau Archipelago. Ono is known for its ancient method of fermenting breadfruit, plantains, and dalo underground. The food is stored in a hole in the ground for, sometimes for several years, in preparation for future emergencies. Primary industry dominates the economy; a reforestation program, replanting the island with pine seedlings, is in progress.

Ono - a town of Benjamin, in the "plain of Ono" (1 Chr. 8:12; Ezra 2:33); now Kiryat-Ono, 5 miles north of Lydda (Lod), and about 30 miles northwest of Jerusalem. 21 Ono Glossolalia

i did say on my mailout about this release that it was a collective that was responsible for the music but its just Brian. Many people are involved with the poetry side of things and some of the stuff is sampled poetry but all the music is just brian. its a beautiful cd and its quite hypnotic and a little bit raunchy in places.

i hope that i did it justice writing about it, you should really just check out his blog its got everything on there plus beautiful videos and lots more poems.

oh and its a lot better than Blaine L. Reininger's (ex Tuxedomoon) Album also Called Glossolalia. Thats pretty good tho i'm a big fan of Tuxedomoon especially their recent output.

Duty Mighty is the name given to the demon that apparently haunted the upstairs of Alfred wallis' house. wallis was a painter but was a naive, today he would be described as an 'outsider artist'.
i am currently living on the same road as Alfred's former home. Wallis spent most of his life in poverty whilst
many art dealers and other c***s took advantage of him and sold his artwork to gallerys in london. he was convinced
that the devil lived in the upstairs part of his house and he didnt go upstairs he just lived downstairs and painted.
he referred to the devil upstairs as ''duty mighty''. I know all this cos a guy i met is writing a book about his life.
its a really sad tale, hopefully you can find out some more about him although i dont think there is to much
heavy research done on his life. 3 back road west was the house that he lived in (with duty mighty upstairs) at the moment i live on that street and weirdly enough 2 distinct voices can be heard shouting 'oi' on track 2 ( hence the title) but i didnt actually put them there..... The Hospice Shop in Rawtenstall - Ono Press Pictures

Sadly The Rossendale Hospice Shop on Queens Square Rawtenstall has closed its doors this August. i'm not completely gutted because they never got many interesting records in there, however the staff were very lovely and on my last visit they tried to sell me a knitting machine that i displayed a mild interest in. Maybe i should have bought it for Alice sorry Alice if your reading this, i didnt buy it, you have lots of stuff anyway she probably will live without a knitting machine. back to the real point of this post, photographs!

I just want to add if anyone from the shop does read this (v,unlikely) i did really enjoy just browsing in your shop and the staff were always the friendly types who were up for a conversation or even just to give me some advice on how best to cook fish. It will be a very sad day when charity shops like this dissapear for one reason or another if only for because people like me wont have anyone to chat with when they go for a browse in the shops in their nearest town.

You cant get interactive shopping like that on the internet, they (big brother) will charge you for service like that in the future once they have got rid of all the old people who like to chat and closed all the non profit organizations down. and that will indeed be a very sad day.

19 Ono Danger

Black Toothed Grin's third release is another small step forward in us learning the art of one microphone garage recording techniques. As you might be able to guess we had such a good time recording these tracks and letting the world have a laugh at our mistakes and intentional music making hiccups its all part of the fun. This music is not made with advanced techniques or even expensive equipment .ts just two lifelong friends and some special guests along the way. My Mums old Dictaphone records all the danger direct to analog with nasty recycled tapes. Its quite exciting really just making music for fun even if its terrible i could just give away 30 copies easily! The first and last tracks on this CD are actually good as they are produced by Ikey on a rainy summer day in Yorkshire, they include bits of Kurt Schwitters poetry. I'm a fan ! i'm not saying we sound like any of the following artists but the idea of Black Toothed Grin aspires to sound like the following : Sickdog, Camera 3, Kemialliset Ystävät, The Units (both of them), Moha, Swans and Plastic Ono Band (in out dreams)

18 Ono Astroseismology

Isaac's second release on ono takes inspiration from the sounds emerge from the heavens. Asteroseismology is the science that studies the internal structure of pulsating stars by the interpretation of their frequency spectra. This cd is looking up into the sky at night but being able to hear the stars as well as see them! Isaac has got some of the sounds he used in these tracks from this site Sounds Of The Universe, he also asked me to link to a couple of other relevant sites that he has found useful in making the music. List : Top ten albums of the moment

Since i got an email from my Swiss friend Alessio he was kinda prompting me to make a new 'list', so here is my fave Lp's at the moment just for Alessio. Sometimes only one track needs to strike a chord with me to make it a good album but a truly wonderful album needs something much more than that. these records all have that special something for me. Most of them are old , most of them cost me less than £5. Its finds like this that make me go out most days looking for records. Its quite a serious addiction to be perfectly honest. I sometimes see people that i may end up like, in record shops older than me and still on the hunt for that illusive record. this list is starting with a record i listened to three times today just because i can. while i was stamping and wrapping all the forthcoming ono releases.

10* so the first on the list at number 10 is the very interesting FRANCE By Gordon Jenkins. Recorded in 'process 70' this album is an incredible sounding thing considering its age. The sound you get on this record is likened to watching a film, with all the drama of these little 'scenes' you get as you listen. its all about a trip to paris for a group of american tourists. its quite a journey that involves flying, being robbed, dancing with smooth talking french men, going to the Louvre, love, car crashes. All this is accompanied with the glorious soundtrack by Gordon Jenkins (and his orchestra) Favorite track has to be : Danse Avec Moi , this is the track where the lady gets caught in the rain and then becomes prey for a smooth talking french man with an umbrella. its magic waiting to happen.

9* Number 9 on the list is Cul De Sac : Ecim , mice backwards, see > nice record found dead cheap but i only knew about this thanks to Danny from Piccadilly records he played it one time and shared his knowledge. i'm not sure what track he played off it but it sounded out of this world. i was very impressed, he's got a wide ranging taste has that man! this record is well worth picking up but you dont see it often. Pick of the album has to be the John Fahey Song : 'The Portland Cement Factory at Monolith, California'. its a screeching train wreck of a song. download it if you can find it somewhere...

8* number 8 is Chris Corsano : The Young Cricketer. another record indirectly linked to Danny@Piccadilly, i saw Chris Corsano play as a member of sunburned hand of the man at the bowls club a while ago and my friend monika bought the CD version of 'The Young Cricketer' we listened to it on the car on the way home and i thought it was painful but some things take time to sink in. the thing about young cricketer is its all done without any editing and no overdubbing or anything like that so its basically an undiluted listen to chris corsano making music at home when he was living in manchester using all the things he could get his hands on. Recorded in Manchester England Feb 1-3, 06 (Except for side a track 2 recorded January sixth. Using drums, cymbals, baritone & alto saxophone mouthpeices with plastic tube and/or funnel, and/or shower attachment apparatus, pot lids, lamp base, scotch tape, violin-string-snare-drum contraption, bows, sticks, butter knives, and a superball on a stick, some distortion used on side B when mixing tracks 7 and especially 8, but other than that, no electronics either. No track choice cos its more of a journey and inspiration as a whole album.
7* Next on the list is Antena : "Camino Del Sol" reissued last year this still a brilliant album initially i really loved camino del sol the title track but i have since been drawn towards 'To Climb the Cliff' , so much so that i dj'd it on wednesday, i originally got this album as a cdr off my friend john, he was buzzing about it so he wanted me to hear it too. i absolutely loved having the cdr and when i got the Lp i just carried on listening to it. sometimes when you actually have the record itself i find i have already listened to it too much on my ipod but this is long term quality. its summer music definitely. i wish it was summer now.

6* Next one has got to be No One Cares By Frank Sinatra just because of the number of times i have listened to it recently. This Lp is the best I've heard from Sinatra, also arranged By Gordon Jenkins i already wrote about this ages ago so i'll not go on again. standout track is 'I Dont Stand A Ghost Of A Chance With You'. Tip of the century. Gloomy rain music for singletons with too much time on their hands. This is dedicated to my future girlfriend whoever she may be, i'm sure i dont stand a ghost of a chance with her lets hope she likes me anyway just the way i am.
5* Number five on the list today is Martin Rev LP on Lust Unlust Music. if only for a few tracks that just shine. Mari, Recommended listening from Matt Wand and Jomo , My favourite track. i wish all electro music sounded this raw, this loud. on top of that it was a total find for me, super cheap 1979 original. i was very happy to find this. I just need some more Suicide now.
4* number 4 is another Sinatra album this time alongside Count Basie and arranged by the "ON FIRE" Quincy Jones! after watching that documentary on Quincy Jones's life i really needed to track down the sinatra LPs that he had a part in. as you can imagine this is pretty swinging. its such quality just imagine the kind of kit they must have used to record it with. The VERY BEST , thats what . the best players the smoothest most naughty voice of the 20th century. Those mafia connections just make sinatra a little bit more interesting. With "Q" and sinatra and basie all together doing a studio album magic was bound to happen and this is rich with upbeat immensely powerful songs. my choice on this one has got to be the upbeat monster 'I Believe In You' for instant uplift when you've just finished listening to 'No One Cares'. Absolutely Swingin party music. i want this at my wedding, take note dj friends. plus its got "Frank & Splank" on the cover. Bonus.

3*Number 3, the magic number goes to Arthur Russell. This LPx3 cost me a whole lot of cash and its probably only got about one Lp's worth of music that justifies the price tag but its a nice item and the tracks on the Orange coloured LP "Instrumental's Volume 1&2 make it the special album that deserves to be at no 3 on the list! dont want to say too much because so many people must gas about Arthur Russell but these tracks are mostly his Cello Compositions and they sound like music i'd want to hear in heaven. Pick of the Bunch is Instrumentals 2 track 1, previously released on Les Disques Du Crepuscule in 1984. Joyful sounds that will live forever absolutely timeless.
2*its late but i'm almost there so i'll carry on... number 2 on the list has to be special hasn't it so for number two i will pick Flying Lizards first LP on Virgin. Its another all good album but the best track for me is 'Her Story' produced buy the man who produced This Heat. David Cunningham. The late seventies and early Eighties would just not have been the same without this man's input. Not that i was even born when he was doing his best stuff... oh well its ok to like old stuff and this is excellent. All the Flying Lizards records are worth checking out.

1* The top spot is saved for the lady that sang from her soul. Nina Simone : At Newport. Its nice and ive still not found live at Carnegie Hall so this will have to do for now. if anyone sees it for less than 20 quid on Colpix then please get it for me i'll pay you back. since i'm flagging now cos i wrote way too much on some of the others. i suppose there is no real need to talk about nina because i know relatively little. pick of the album is 'Flo Me La' special mention to Bobby Hamilton on Drums, Al Shackman on Guitar and Chris White on Bass. They are the ones that make this one stand out a bit more to me than more common Nina Simone albums. Flo Me La Means "To Walk" or "Walking Along" its got real power... the whole album is a winner but that track is a booming driving powerhouse.

That completely wraps it up, i'm going to bed. I really hope that Alessio appreciates that effort. lets hope he comes up with some good lists as a response. come on Alessio (or anyone else for that matter. do me a list or even just scan an old list for me to check out! shopping lists are fine too. zzzzzz

List : Ideal Girlfriend

Since it was my birthday on monday i needed to go out and celebrate so thanks to start running i had a chance to show off some of my works that have become sleeves to my cd's (see previous posts!) and also play records with Matt Wand. Back to the job in hand anyway. Thanks to my friend the friendly and supportive Black Lodge i ended up going out on the town for an extended birthday celebration. I'm glad about this as my first birthday celebration was a bit tame , going to the pub for my tea is not high on my list of 'things to do for my birthday'. which would make a good list ... will get back to that list girlfriend would say.

Thankyou mr black lodge you firstly saved me from the vagabonds of manchester and dragged my records all the way to my home for the night and secondly made my birthday into an extra bit of an event. and so i come round to posting what i really want to post on my birthday, dedicated to the sender of the card my uncle Richard, a list of the top ten things my ideal

I met this very interesting young lady at a party in london @ Tate Moss that i was playing records at. it was a very interesting night and i took this picture of this special girl before i actually knew who she was her name is Cristina Bueno.

i really wanted to just write a bit about her on here because she's one of the most interesting people i know her work is very beautiful and her illustrations are simple but very individual and striking. she has done a lot of books recently private presses of her own ideas and each of these beautiful books is a work of art in itself. if you get the chance to buy one of them then you wont regret it. her simple words are to the point and the ideas in the books are incredibly complex. Miss Bueno speaks her mind in various languages !

Andy Odia and Ste Sequence's Massive Smogasboard and i'd never been in common before. i was a bit impressed. ended up meeting a few people and passing out (in a street round the back of common) thanks to Rob Holloway's generous beer buying! i was really into the venue and i saw Tim Hamblin playing stuff that night. he does mixes under the Inserted name check them out. Soon after meeting Tim for the first time and shouting at him saying how good i thought his tunes sounded, i went outside and passed out in the street round the back of common. when i woke up the whole event was over and my girlfriend at the time was seriously worried about me. Duvel is not the best beer to drink if you want to stay compusmentus.

i got on it and convinced common that we were worth giving a trial so we moved to common and lick continued the journey from there...

brilliant night the first lick at common . Baz from New Religion played all the tunes. i remember stuff like shake on frictional and lots and lots of tracks i didnt know at the time. futuresonic weekend as well...a very good party !

i remember this one quite well... Martyn Mooken Lester came over from leeds but had to get a train back early ish leaving only me and Johnny Abstract playing records together (as duncan couldn't make it) i'd just discovered Hunting out with an Arial Eye By Muslimgauze and i was flipping out listening to it (its from 1984)Johnny played me some ace bits when everyone went home stuff like Dopplereffekt Infophysix which i promptly went out and bought the next day from vinyl exchange!

like i said before you always learn something even if its empty . me and johnny had an ace time and i think i finished the night on my own playing to an empty bar absolutely no one there.

nice evening, memorable for good reasons.

Otb Rogue Dj Unit is Conor and His mate who now does a night called Faktion. Conor worked at pelikanneck at the time and i used to go in and see him all the time to get the new tracks out that week... or whatever happened to be out. i seem to remember conor's friend (who's name escapes me) playing Quadrant : Hyperism and some stuff on AI records a claro intelecto track. it all got a bit too banging generally and conor kept on nipping outside to have a smoke so his mixing was a bit wonky . i think he likes it like that.

a good night all round really. the faktion boys played some ace tracks i remember a lot of stuff i wasn't aware of yet. i always found that doing my own events and asking people to come down to play i got a lot of inspiration and knowledge from these guys playing these interesting records.

Duncan played some absolutely ace stuff at this one i remember that Absolut Brihka 12" and UR : Journey Of The Dragons. i seem to remember it got a bit rowdy and we annoyed the people in Kro2 a little bit when people started cheering cos johnny was doing really wicked mixes and playing proper good music ! all on a House/techno vibe. no idea what he actually played but i will search for the video evidence.

i asked miles to come and dj at this one as it was my birthday and i fancied making a bit of an event out of it! So miles came down and along with him loads of the friendly locals johnny, duncan, conor, bez, dave etc... miles played a few things i remember stuff like Rhythm and Sound : King in My Empire, Moritz : Domina CCMix, The JAN edit of Larry Heard, cant remember much more than that but it was a brilliant birthday. its a long time ago now and i wish i could remember more of what happened but hey three records is a pretty good start. no idea what i played that night.

i did a night in manchester for a long while with my mate rob and i fancied making an archive of all the flyers and some info about each one before i forget it all completely. The first one i ever did was nice i think me and rob bailey dj'd for the first bit of it and Duncan who works in vinyl exchange in manchester played some brilliant tracks too.

not totally sure what we all played but rob always played some CCO stuff and i was liking Apparat and some stuff clone in amsterdam were putting out at that time Dexter ZWAM The Other People Place : Sorrow and a Cup of Joe. also Ascii Disko : Schanze, Pepe Bradock : 4 came out around that time. Metro : Brownstone Express and Alexander Robotnik : Dance Boy Dance, i also really liked Mouse On Mars : Cache Coeur Naif EP.

if you know any of these tunes then you will get the general idea of how we started up playing nice electronic music that we thought would work well in bars. i'm not really sure who played at this 'Lick' because we had very minimal flyers... the flyers get better as rob got more confident with working his designs into the limitations of 'marc the printers' we got all our flyers done there. .

Miranda July is the lady who directed You And Me And Everyone We Know i think she's brilliant, her work is all about being real and positive even if you are not one of those people who finds their live is happening correctly. I often feel like my life is a bit of a struggle and i dont feel particularly lucky most of the time well maybe i am lucky. the point is, like a lot of people i really relate to her characters. i guess things always happen for a reason and Hannah Black was meant to give me that book to read.

here is my first official list

I wrote abit on the back for her a bit of an explanation, i'm feeling really positive and useful at the moment really enjoying not having a job to go too and being skint is quite nice. I got the chance to go Woofing (working on an organic farm) this weekend it was incredible. sue and mike really made it a brilliant trip for me letting me camp in their lovely garden. Sylvia asked me to go and laughed her way through the entire weekend and Hannah was as embarrassed as any teenager would be of her outgoing and talkative mother. i need more trips like that to keep me inspired. i guess i was very lucky this time. Clun was the best summer holiday i have had in years and years! here's the note on the back of the list; my undiluted thoughts at the time of starting the list, i was actually writing in the rain sat in a tent listening to frank sinatra!

we all went to the clun carnival on saturday morning sue even won some prizes for her vegtables and i got up earlier than i have for a long time to walk dogs before breakfast. Sues amazing cooking kept me energized enough to go for a couple of miles walk before i needed any fuel!

I'm really glad Hannah lent me the book; it sometimes takes one thing to trigger a whole series of realizations and one thing leads to another and before you know it you have a whole series of ideas sprouting. ive been listening to a lot of frank Sinatra recently i wanted to write a bit about it on here as i think that frank ... Along with a great arranger is a stunning combination. initially i got semi interested in tracking down the 'No One Cares' LP after reading an interesting article about it in a section of a french music mag . cant find the original article now but anyway the magazine section is called 'cover story'.

so, the crack with Sinatra is basically he's done a load of ok albums but only about 5 are really ace. you find 'come fly with me', 'songs for swingin lovers' and the other assorted UP Sinatra records pretty often. The really great LPs are the gloomy rainy ones. 'No one cares' from is my starting point and has some absolutely stunning tracks on it, my favorite being 'Stormy Weather' i always had a soft spot for Mr Sinatra and since watching a documentary on Quincy Jones a few weeks ago i have been hunting down all the albums produced by 'Q' i found 'It Might As Well Be Swing' the other day , thats Sinatra and Basie and Quincy, Sinatra "At the Sands" is a live album with Quincy arranging it and Basie on the piano it has lots of conversational interludes and some jokes by Sinatra just showing how much of a great showman he must have been in his finest years...

The Best two albums in my humble opinion are along side Sinatra's genius (i dont use this word often) arranger Gordon Jenkins. Gordon Jenkins is responsible for 'No One Cares' and also 'Where Are You?'. i have a couple of albums with Nelson Riddle Accompanying Sinatra and although they are gloomy they are not as perfect and lonely as the Gordon Jenkins albums. 'Autumn Leaves'From Where Are You?

Next on my list to track down is the concept album from 1979 with Gordon Jenkins doing the business on the third vinyl 'Future' it looks like its going to be on the same end of the world tip as the other Jenkins albums. I really enjoy listening to this stuff in the rain sat alone in a tent.

i just found this article on the history of the use and misuse of records. it got me thinking ...

i have just sent emails to a lot of my friends asking them to submit a 5 min track each for a minidisk only compilation. since reading this and the ideas contained in this collection of writings about all these pioneers making so many different advancements. the information held in this bit of writing is so so inspirational to me i get excited every time i find something like this. Christian Marclay "Record Player" was the last time i felt like this. i find that i become productive when i create tasks for myself you have to keep finding things to throw yourself into. Danny and Isaac both told me that they really enjoyed making the poetry releases because they had something to aim at. most of the time all we need is a starting point to get us on the ladder and moving toward producing worthwhile work. The tag "ART" was always something that i found difficult to aspire to, not believing in my own work was something i always suffered. most of the time i didnt have a task to complete i didnt create projects for myself to work through. i realise that people need boundaries to break them down. its obvious really and i suppose you just need to learn these kind of things yourself through working things out. since completing my fine art degree 3 years ago and making little work in the time since i'm only now realising that i have been working all along without realizing what my own method of working actually was. thinking outside the box is really what i needed to be doing all along and somehow i am an artist again.

from here on in, every blog post i do for my label is going to have a number, so that i can keep track of the number of releases i do. Other posts i make wont have a number this is the first un numbered post.
i wanted to write a bit about perversion. the reason is: i was googling 'pervert' because gultskra artikler's new album out in august has a track on it called 'Pervie' you can listen to it here. anyway along the way. As you do, i ended up looking up Paraphilia. there is a really ace track by dopplereffekt called Plastiphilia Lyrics well i dont think that Plastiphilia is actually a valid paraphilia but its quite a good word anyhow. There are lots and lots of really good paraphilias that are actually real words. i found it incredibly interesting so i decided to do a top ten but it then turned into fifteen because there were so so many on the list.

16 Ono Resistance

i wanted to write a bit about this release on ono. Ono Resistance is a sort of noise techno hybrid using 'techno' instruments to make something different the first two tracks are electronic feedback soundscapes that hint toward a knowledge of some of the recent stateside electronic noise and power electronics of recent times, wolf eyes, burning star core you get the picture... Track 3 is something slightly different a kind of rhythmic noise track that nods as much to larry heard and chicago experimental house music as it does to british radiophonic music. this last track is not house music but it certainly has a groove and the feeling and space that knows house but doesn't try to recreate what has already been done to death a million times before.

the influence and knowledge of a openess to all kinds of sound has led to this release being made in northern england by some guys with a passion for misusing and recycling bits of vintage kit. you tube 'men and Boxes' Some of the instruments used in this release are listed below.

The People who made the music contained on this disc are music lovers through and through and each of the contributors have much to contribute to the world of music and i hope that they produce some more sounds like this. because it is not empty production line music made for a label to capitalise on. This is raw quietly confident music who's whole aesthetic is based on every person on this earths right to choose what happens in the coming storm.

Black toothed grin is mine and jan's band. Started out of complete necessity just because we had to make some music! black toothed grin is an evolving and meandering creation started by two lifelong friends and a borrowed drum kit from Pendle Coven's Miles Whittaker. We dont really use fancy equipment, we dont have a myspace we like having a bit of fun, this music is certainly not indie landfill. My fingers were very sore after printing all the sleeves for the last four releases so please look after them if you have one. this wont be getting a repress !
